Nick talks...Superman Returns!

Thought I'd give my 2 cents about Superman Returns. It's weird when I see a movie before it comes out and I still feel like I'm the last one to see it. But customers have been talking about it so much lately and Dan caught the sneakier peak two sundays ago, poor me, I only saw it a day early.

But I have to agree with Dan's review all the way (scroll down for that). Except I didn't really think it was slow. They did a good job of writing danger into a Superman story without resorting to any cosmic battles. And it stayed pretty believable. I didn

I also have to say that DC has really stepped up and taken over the movies after Marvel's past few years of box office success. Superman, along with Batman Begins and V for Vendetta just seem to have more class to them. Better cinematography. Smarter scripts. and no annoyingly fresh soundtrack forced in or casual Macy Gray street performance.

But the new Spider-man trailer does look kinda cool.

-Nick

Superman Returns...again...and again...and...

After some thought, a cooling of the fanboy hysteria, and another good movie, I have decided to redo my rating for Superman Returns. Sometimes I forget that there is a negative side to all the numbers, so I may pump the numbers higher then they should be. The revised stats are as follows: For Fun, and Not Fun, I issue forth with a +5,(It does tend to run long at the end). On the competing axis, I am going to have to lower it to -1. While the dialogue is well written, and most of the actors are very good, the actual plot of the story is lacking. The main character(Superman) comes off at times as a whiny little bitch to be frank. "My girlfriend got pregnant with some other dude and now they're living together!" Yeah, well thats what happens when you disappear for five years.

Life Drawing Sessions Back on Thursday, July 6

This Thursday, July 6, Star Clipper's Life Drawing Session returns. We'll have a clothed model doing poses from 6:30-8:30 but the basement will be open at 6:00 so come in early, get a good seat, bring some of your work, and chat it up. Five bucks gets you in.

The Life Drawing Session is an all-ages event held at Star Clipper on the first Thursday of every month for people interested in drawing comics or drawing in general.

Clerks II

I got to see a sneak peak of Clerks 2 last week, and man was I floored! I didn't expect too much after Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and I was hoping that it didn't have that big movie feel of Dogma. But I think that going back to his roots with Clerks has served him well. While this is a movie mostly for fans of the original, as there are many jokes only they will get, it's also enough of its own movie that newcomers should enjoy it as well. Most of the actors seem to have fallen right back into their original roles easily, but surprisingly enough it's Jay and Silent Bob that stick out this time. It just seemed like they were trying too hard. After everything that happened to them over the past couple of movies, this just felt too small for them. But if you really wanted to delve into it I guess you could say that they needed some normalcy after all the crazy. But on to the numbers, as a long time Kevin Smith fan, and a fan of the original, I laughed the whole way through, earning it a solid +8 for fun. On the technical scale I have to give it about a +5, not great, but not too bad. As I said, some overacting, some underacting, sometimes the acting was at odds with the dialogue, but overall better then not.

Dan

Boy...that was Super!

I went and saw Superman Returns Tuesday night and thought it was terrific. I pretty much agree with everything Dan said in his review, so I won't get too into it except to add that the 'slow' scenes were beautifully done, and I never had the sense that the film needed to pick up the pace. The action scenes were amazing and Singer paid great homage to the original 1970's films that, while perhaps slightly campy, still brought a smile to my face. Singer also gave a nod to the first Action Comics cover - so keep a look out for it (hint, it involves Superman lifting a car). Just go see it, you're going to like it.

Superman Returns...again!

So remember when they said "You'll believe a man can fly"? Yeah, well, your still gonna believe it. This past Sunday I attended an early sneak peak of the Supes movie. Very Nice. Very Nice, Indeed! Now right out front I should remind you that this is supposed to be the new Superman III. No Quest for Peace, no Supergirl, none of it! Thank god and Bryan Singer! Bearing that in mind, this was an amazingly well cast movie. Almost every single character reminds you of, but not in a bad way, the previous actors. It isn't that they look like the original cast, because they don't, but that they are playing the SAME characters as the first cast. It's hard to tell if Kevin Spacey is playing Lex Luthor, or if he's playing Gene Hackman playing Lex Luthor. Which, if he is, Spacey does an amazing Hackman! I don't really want to tell you anything of the actual plot, because I hate when people do that to me. I will say this, if the last movie you saw was X-Men 3, go see something else first. After all that action, it will make this seem ungodly slow, like a bad rock and roll station, too much talk, not enough rock. This is a character driven drama designed to reintroduce us to the modern Superman, not a slugfest. But all that said, on the McNamara scale of movies this rates a low +8 on the fun, and about the same on quality. With good acting, great direction, some amazing special effects, and the best opening credits scene that I can remember in a long time, Superman Returns with a solid +8 on the McNamara Sliding Scale of Film. Check back for the blog I write after the movie opens, based off this website. And again, if you ask, I will deny having seen it.

Superman Returns

Keep your eyes peeled on Thursday the 22nd for the Get Out section in the Post-Dispatch. It shouldn't take you too long to figure out what I'm hinting at due to it's comic book nature. But I can say no more or they'll hang me by my feet over a barrel of rats. And personally, I like living a lot more then I like any of you.

We have lots planned for the release of Superman Returns - it's gonna be fun, fun, fun!

Living in the DMZ

So as I have said before, one of the great things about DC as a publisher is that they have a place in their stable for any type of story. One such, and my favorite new book, is DMZ. Written by Brian Wood (Demo, Local, Channel One), and illustrated by Riccardo Burchielli (John Doe), is the story of the second American Civil War. Well, not really. The main character, Matty Roth, is kind of like a young Spider Jerusalem, from Transmetropolitan. See, Matty thinks he's landed a gig as an intern with the largest news agency in what's left of the United States. Little does he know that he has been assigned as a photo tech to the first reporter given permission to enter Manhattan, the DMZ. Matty finds himself stranded in lower Manhattan with no way out, and relizes that someone still needs to tell the stories of the people living there. The first trade, reasonably priced at 9.99 includes the first five stories, which are all stand alone pieces about different sections of town. It gives a really good feel for the world these people are living in, and sets up what I am sure is going to be a great series. If you liked Transmet, or enjoy Joe Saccao, I highly, highly recommend this book.

Life Drawing Sessions RULE!

The Life Drawing Session on Thursday was a big success. Thanks to everyone who showed up to brave the basement, especially our model Elizabeth, who was very professional and helpful since it was our first time doing this. It looks like we will be making it a regular event, probably twice a month, starting next month. Keep your eyes on the newletter (or here) for more details.

Next time, I promise better lighting, more space, and 20% more breathable air!

We're getting some models lined up with interesting themes, but we've had a request for a gothic lolita and, of course, a ninja. Anyone?

A Black Hole Ate the Arch!

Last night (or possibly early this morning) I was flipping through the channels while AJ was working on importing all the new monthly codes from Diamond into our database and I happened upon 'The Black Hole.'

Thinking it was the classic '70s feature from Disney I figured why not check it out, right? But I was mistaken - it was a terrible Sci-Fi feature. Sci-Fi has some great stuff (read Battlestar Galactica) but for some reason they insist on making some really terrible feature movies starring has-beens from the mid 1980's. The Black Hole featured Judd Nelson (with really bad pointy hair) and Kristy Swanson (the original Buffy) who were scientists working on a project to do something with a black hole...I dunno. Anyway, as you might expect, the black hole gets out of control, releasing some weird power draining alien and Judd Nelson has to save...St. Louis. Because it all takes place in St. Louis!

Judd's lab is actually the planetarium at the St. Louis Science Center (and it's the first thing to get swallowed up by the black hole). This was interesting to AJ and I since AJ works at the Science Center... Eventually it swallows most of downtown, including the old Busch Stadium and 3/4 of the St. Louis Arch in a highly entertaining display of black hole destructo-lust.

Judd eventually saves the city from annihilation by reuniting the weird alien thing with the black hole - sealing it up forever, winning the respect of the military and getting all the girls. GO JUDD!

More Small Press

We got a bunch of great stuff in the other day from small press Chicago artist Sarah Becan, who seems pretty awesome. The first thing I like about her is the presentation of her books. In the land of the photocopied mini-comics, the one with the hand-serigraphed cover is king. The second thing I like about her is her source of material. She taps history (monkey history), a ouija board, and her brother's dreams (I think) for her stories. Pretty cool.

With Monkeynauts and Why We Call Them Robots she gives us some interesting trivia that everyone must know about space monkeys and the origin of the word 'robot.'

The Shuteye series has two stories, written by David Becan. One about a Catalan that deserts his group of explorers and settles with the natives and another about a liar that isn't sure if he's lying or not. They seem to only be connected by the drifting settings and characters that seem to be dreaming. Pretty good, but if you write an ethereal story its hard to give it weight and sustenance.

Same goes for the Ouija Board Interviews, but I still dig em. They're supposed to really be from ouija board use, which I don't advocate, but the comics are good. Equal parts cute and creepy. If you've seen them before, you should still check out the 4th one that just came out. (sorry no pic)

X-men 3 Counterpoint

It would appear that Dan was pretty unhappy with X-Men. Nevertheless, I took a chance and saw it, well, I really liked it. It's not as good as the first two that Singer directed, and you definitely get the sense that it's a little clunkier and doesn't flow quite as well, but it's still totally worth seeing in the theatre.

The action sequences are well done, and the plot isn't as disjointed as some would have us believe. Actually, I thought the plot was perfectly cohesive. They do assume that the audience knows most of the cast of characters, and they don't spend enough time developing how some characters (like McCoy, for instance) got on the scene. During the credits, I saw billing for several characters I don't remember seeing in the film, so when it comes out on DVD I'll have to keep a lookout for them.

All in all, though, I have to disagree with Dan about the quality of the picture, and I encourage folks to go see it - then come and buy a trade! And make sure you stay through the credits.

Redbull & Superman Returns

You probably don't know, but I'm a big Formula 1 racing fan. Last weekend for the Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo, Red Bull Racing was sponsored by Warner Bros. More specifacilly, Superman Returns. It was pretty cool, actually; they painted up the car with Superman livery and the drivers and pit crews all got new Superman themed outfits. I couldn't find a picture of the pit crews, but here's a couple of the car and the drivers.

Jump THIS shark, X-MEN!

So I went and saw X-Men this past weekend. I have an unusual way of grading movies, so let me explain it really quick. Imagine a cross, along the X axis is the "fun" and "not fun", ranging from -10(not fun), to 10(fun). Along the Y axis is "good", and "not good" with the same scale. Take Schindlers List, very good, but no fun. Starship Troopers is really fun, but no good.

That explained, I give X3 a resounding 0. While it was fun, +6, it was a pretty bad movie in general, -6. There were so many plot holes it was scary. Unless a character had been developed in a previous movie, or you read the X-Men books, you didn't know a thing about them. For example, Beast shows up and plays a major part of the movie, but they tell you pretty much nothing about him. They imply that he used to live at the mansion when he stops by, and then later he's trying to fit into his old uniform, so he must have been an X-Man at some point. But if they're going for the "Well, comic fan's would know that he was one of the original X-Men", then what Iceman and Angel, weren't they original X-Men as well? And in the previous movies weren't Storm, Cyclops, and Marvel Girl the original X-Men?

It seemed to me that they just took a bunch of cool scenes from all the comics and stitched them together in the best order they could. And yes, there are some really cool scenes in this, but a bunch of scenes do not make a movie. Movies have plot and narrative, this does not.

To sum up, X3: The Last Stand jumps the shark in a big way. If you do go and see it, make sure you stay all the way through the credits for special bonus shark jumping scene at the end. But if you want to spend 8 bucks on some good X-Men, put it towards an Astonishing X-Men trade and wait for the DVD. Oh, and if you come into the store, I will deny having seen it.

Southland Tales

So...sick...of talking about...X-men and Superman movies...Perhaps it is my great responsibility, as comic book provider, to have a bold opinion about each that I stand firmly by. But I don't. I'll probably go see them. They'll probably be 'pretty good'. But instead I'm going to take my usual snobby alternative approach and say that the best comic book-related movie of the year will be Southland Tales, a movie that I haven't seen a single clip or frame from, and it stars The Rock, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Sean William Scott but the important thing is its directed by Richard Kelly, the guy behind Donnie Darko.

Even though that's his first and only movie, its so good and has such an attention to detail (from writing to sound design to the awesome website that accompanied it) that I trust his new one will be even awesomer.

So wait, didn't I say that it was comic-related? Why, yes I did. Its not based on a comic, nor are they going to be releasing a terrible movie adaptation of the movie. Instead, the 'first 3 acts' will be released as 3 separate graphic novels (the 1st is due next week), written by Kelly. The film will then contain the last 3 acts. They seem to be making a big deal about the comics, giving them equal importance in the '6-part story'

You can check out the website here, but I'll warn you, its a bit confusing and esoteric. Its not finished yet, but they're saying its going well beyond the size and scope of any other film website.

If you want the straight skinny try here.

and if that's not enough, check out the forums for crazed fans interpreting any and all known details.

-Nick
