Now Hiring

So, do I have a special little treat for all of you web-heads out there: Star Clipper is hiring for the summer! Now what does this mean for you? Well, maybe not much, but maybe... well, who knows? I thought I would give you guys and girls who read our blogs a little something over your competition, namely, what we are looking for in candidates. So here they are, in no particular order:

Experience: While having worked in a comic shop before is a bonus, it's certainly not necessary. Book store experience of any type is a plus, as is a general retail background. People with experience in design or art are also welcome to apply. Now don't worry you food service people, I haven't forgotten you. Coming from a food service background myself, I know the temperament and customer service skills that you have to develop in that industry are crucial.

Product Knowledge: Knowledge of mainstream comics, mini comics, alternative comics, magazines, collectibles, designer toys, manga, & anime are just some of the things we look for in an applicant.

Handwriting: I know this sounds totally B.S., but neat handwriting on an application is the first thing that I look for when reading over the applications. Take your time, don't rush, and print legibly.

Customer Interaction & Presence: I really look at this during the interview process, it's not really something you can put on an application. Presence is the ability to engage a customer, rather then just respond to one.

And last but not least: Fill the application out all the way. An application with just your name, phone number and availability on it is not going to get very far at all. If you have to staple extra pages with it, do it! The more info you provide the better your chances. Where you on the debate team in High School? Put that down under skills or training. Take it home with you. Make sure you have all the right info as far as previous job addresses and phone numbers. And don't forget, refrences are the icing on the cake, with out them, eh, not so much 'ya know?

Allright, that's it for this week, have a good one and I'll talk at you next week. Best of luck to you all!

I'm not nearly as evil as I thought

You Are 72% Evil

You are very evil. And you're too evil to care.
Those who love you probably also fear you. A lot.

Munny Show

The Munny Show Opening Reception on the 1st was a big success. We had a lot of great submissions and I don't think we've ever had so many people in the store at one time. Thanks to everyone involved.

After seeing the great stuff that came out of the Munny shows in NY and California, I was a little worried that we weren't going to be able to hold our own in the Mid-West, but I think we did. In quality and originality...maybe not mine, specifically, but everyone else seemed to have talent.

Its gonna stay up till the 15th, so If you haven't seen it, you should come and check it out. Also, someone was nice enough to take a million pictures at the reception. You can check em out on Kidrobot's forum here...

I'm giving my unofficial best of show to Brian Cummings who did two different Munnies. One, with a toaster head (and removable toast) and another, in a space suit, with an alien facehugger. Both very clean and detailed.

My official best of show goes to me, and my munny Slinky. Go Slinky!

Non-Sequitor

I have been watching this MXC(Most Extreme Elimination Challenge aka Takishi's Castle) rip-off lately, and it got me to thinking, what if they did the same for an American show? Something like Fear Factor. Or, even better, The Price is Right! Can't you just imagine all the crazy shit they could do with Bob Barker? Now obviously you would lose some of the great slapstick that MXC provides, but I think it has potential.

On a comic/science note for all you geeks out there, check out this story from last month's Discover Magazine. This is especially for anyone who has read Grant Morrison's New X-Men.

It starts out talking about this guy who had to get a paternity test to prove he wasn't the baby's daddy. Except the test said he was. After two years of legal battles the guy proved that he was not the father, and that the testing company had made a mistake. This nicely leads into the next story about a woman who was applying for welfare and was using a DNA test to establish the maternity of her two kids. But the DNA test read as if she was a close relative, not the mother. Even the child that she gave birth to during the ensuring trial tested the same. The woman was apparently a tetragametic chimera. Tetragametic chimera's are apparently created when two eggs are fetilized by two different sperm. Then instead of each developing separetly, they fuse into a single zygote. This results in rare cases of people with different colored eyes, patchy skin, and hermaphrodites, if the zygotes are of the opposite sex. If they are of the same sex, it will sometimes result in some organs being made of cells from the genetic twin and not from the host body.

This on its own has interesting potential for organ transplant. Its suspected that up to 15% of the human population maybe the latter of these two types of chimera's. But what does all this have to do with comics? Xavier was born with one of these, Cassandra Nova. This is why you read more then just comics, because some times reality can be crazier then any thing you or I might dream up. I would also recommend trying the Wikipedia entry on this.

Nick Eats Crow Too!

You see that tag team pun action?! We set that up. Oh yeah! and you didn't even see it coming.

My lovely girlfriend surprised me with a Drinky Crow cake for my birthday last week. It was tasty. That's it.

Oh, and Tony Millionaire put out a new graphic novel last week, Billy Hazelnuts. It reads like a six-year-old making up a bedtime story. Yeah, its that good, but I'd recommend first-timers to Tony Millionaire should go directly to Maakies and buy all 3 books and then go out and get tattoos of lil Drinky Crow to cover your shameless tweety bird tattoos.
